FAQ - Tell-a-Date

Things you want to know...

How does Tell-a-Date work?

Tell-a-Date is a private phone system, where two members can speak to each other by phone, without having to reveal their phone numbers. On the Introduction Tell-a-Date Call, a Matchmaker uses the system to put two potentially compatible matches in touch. After two members review each other’s information and express an interest in each other, they can call into a toll-free number at a scheduled date and time for an initial 10-minute phone call where they can get to know each other. A Matchmaker can be on the line to make Introductions and help make the conversation go smoothly. If there’s mutual interest after the first call, the Matchmaker can arrange for you and the other member to use Tell-a-Date to forward calls to each other’s home phone, cell or work phone, without disclosing actual phone numbers. These are called Follow-Up Calls. At any time, you can decide to no longer allow the other member’s calls to be forwarded, or you can decide to stop using Tell-a-Date, and start communicating by exchanging real phone numbers. This system is a great way to avoid spending a lot of time emailing and waiting for responses from someone who eventually turns out to lack the qualities you are looking for and to quickly find those who do.

How is Tell-a-Date used to get members to make connections?

There are two ways that members connect using Tell-a-Date. One way is for a Matchmaker to use Tell-a-Date as a way to put two members that they feel will be compatible in touch with each other. In this case, the Matchmaker will send each member Background Information on the other member. If there's mutual interest, a Tell-a-Date Call is arranged. The other way is for a member to give his or her Tell-a-Date number to another member to continue to communicate directly by phone without revealing their actual phone numbers.

How does Tell-a-Date help me?

It is often difficult to get to know someone through a profile, photo and by emailing alone. With Tell-a-Date, you can speak with potential matches over the phone early in the process. A phone call made through Tell-a-Date allows you to gain more insight into the other member's true personality and to get to know them on a deeper personal level, without having to reveal your personal phone number. A Matchmaker can be present on the initial call to make the introduction and ask questions that are specially designed to help members get to know each other quickly and hear how each member presents him or herself. After the call is concluded, each member will send a message to the Matchmaker indicating whether or not they would like to have further communication with the other member. Members that want to make future contact with each other can continue to use Tell-a-Date to communicate without revealing their phone number, and without the assistance of a Matchmaker, or they can elect to exchange phone numbers and talk on their own.

How do I schedule a Tell-a-Date Call with a member I'm interested in?

When you and a potential match express a mutual interest, your Matchmaker will give you and the other member a special phone number to call at a specific date and time. When you call that number, a Matchmaker will be present to make the introduction. This Introduction Call is limited to 10 minutes so you won’t get stuck talking to someone for an extended period of time in the case that you don’t hit it off. It is often hard to try and get three people to agree on different dates and times, so we set it the call up with one date and time, taking into account what you have told us in advance about the dates and times that you are regularly available. Since the call is only 10 minutes long and members receive advance notice and can call for anywhere, we have found that this is the best way to avoid scheduling conflicts. If you wish to continue communicating with a member after this Introduction Call, your Matchmaker will give you a Toll-Free number and pin code to use to call into so that you can speak privately with your match at any time (Follow-Up Calls), without revealing your phone number.

How will I know if someone wants to schedule a Tell-a-Date with me?

When a potential match expresses an interest in talking to you via Tell-a-Date, your Matchmaker will contact you to let you know and to give you the toll-free number and pin code to use to gain access to the line. Your Matchmaker will also give you the date and time of this 10-minute Introduction Call, taking into account the days of the week and times you have indicated you are available.

What is an Introduction Tell-a-Date Call?

The Introduction Tell-a-Date Call lasts just 10 minutes and is designed for members to get to know each other in a safe, fast, and efficient manner and to decide whether they want to continue communicating. A Matchmaker can be present to open the call, make the introduction, and help get the conversation going. The purpose of this Introduction Call is to allow each member to hear how the other member handles him or herself, and experience that member's voice, presence and personality. All of this takes place on a private, secure phone line so that neither member has to reveal their phone number. After the call ends, the Matchmaker will contact each member to find out if they would like to continue communicating through the Tell-a-Date Follow Up Phone System.

What are Tell-a-Date Follow Up Calls?

Follow-Up Calls allow members to talk with each other over the phone privately without revealing their phone numbers. After the Introduction Call each member will let the Matchmaker know if they would like to continue communicating. If they do, the Matchmaker will provide each member with a Toll Free number that they can call at any time, enter a pin code, and have their call automatically forwarded to the other member's home phone, cell phone, or work phone, whichever the other member designates as preferred, or try each until they are reached. When the other member answers the phone, they both speak to each other without either member's number being revealed. The Matchmaker will not be on the line for Follow-Up Calls. If either member decides they no longer want to be contacted by the other member, they simply let their Matchmaker know and the other member's calls will no longer be forwarded to their phone.

When will I be notified whether the member I am interested in wants to speak to me via Tell-a-Date?

You will be notified by email immediately after the member you are interested in has responded to your request. We spend a considerable amount of effort to contact the other member, but even if, for some reason, they can't be reached, you will be notified as to the status within 72 hours. If the member is interested, you will be provided a day and time that you are both available along with the Toll-Free number and unique pin code. The day and time provided is based on when both members have indicated they are available, and the Introduction Call is only 10-minutes long. You simply select the date and time that is best for you, and call the Toll-Free number at that time to speak to the other member.

What if I have to cancel a scheduled call?

If a member schedules an Introduction Call, and decides to cancel after it has been scheduled, the member canceling will be charged a cancellation fee, which is the normal cost of the call as if it had taken place. The non-canceling member will not be charged if the call does not take place. The cancellation fee is to cover the Service Provider’s costs, and to be a penalty to help insure that members keep their scheduled Introduction Call phone appointments.

Will the Matchmaker be on the line while we speak?

Unless you request otherwise, a Matchmaker will be present on the initial 10-minute Introduction Call to introduce each member, help keep the conversation flowing and help each member get a first impression. You may continue to use Tell-a-Date to contact each other after the introduction call without a Matchmaker being present on the call.

How long may I remain on a Tell-a-Date call?

An Introduction Tell-a-Date Call has been designed to be 10-minutes long, because we have found that with the Matchmaker on the call, this length of time is long enough to allow each member to get a first impression of each other and to avoid being stuck on the phone if there is no spark. We understand that there might be instances when some extra time may be needed, and this can be easily arranged at the time of the call. Follow-Up Calls, where you and the other member use Tell-a-Date to talk privately without revealing your phone numbers, have no time limit, and members are charged per minute. We also offer packages for both Introduction and Follow-Up Calls where you can purchase minutes in advance, at a discount, for your convenience.

What subjects should I cover on a Tell-a-Date Introduction Call?

The great thing about Tell-a-Date is that it helps you avoid the common problem of not knowing what to say to break the ice with someone you have just met. For the initial 10-minute Introduction Call, a Matchmaker will have provided a brief summary of each member's background and interests, as well as point out any areas of compatibility. Having the Matchmaker on the phone helps avoid awkward silences and lack of subject matter that people speaking on the phone for the first time sometimes experience. The Introduction Call allows each member to quickly learn more about each other, hear how each other handles themselves during a conversation, experience the member's voice, presence and personality, as well as uncover areas of compatibility.

What if I begin communicating with a member and later decide that I no longer want them to call me?

At any time, either member can decide to no longer allow the other member's calls to be forwarded to their regular phone by contacting their Matchmaker.

How much does Tell-a-Date cost?

To review the costs for Tell-a-Date, please refer to our Terms and Conditions.

How does the Tell-a-Date System increase my safety?

Tell-a-Date increases safety by allowing members to talk to each other on the phone without revealing their own phone numbers. At any time, either member can decide to no longer allow the other member's calls to be forwarded to their private phone, which gives you the security of being able to, if ever necessary, completely sever communication with any member that you have decided it is not in your best interest to stay in touch with.

What if I want to change the number I have Follow-Up Calls forwarded to?

You can, at any time, change the number that your Tell-a-Date Follow-Up Calls are forwarded to. Simply send your Matchmaker a request via email and they will change the forwarding number for you.
